What is Pseudomyxoma?

The term "peritoneal pseudomyxoma" refers to the accumulation of mucin (a gelatinous substance) within the abdomen. The most common cause of pseudomyxoma is a tumor in the appendix, a small part of the large intestine, which is the same area that causes appendicitis.

It is a very rare tumor, with an estimated incidence of 1 case per 1,000,000 inhabitants per year. The affected person usually discovers the tumor through an abnormality in an imaging exam done for another reason or when they notice abdominal swelling caused by the large accumulation of mucin.
